Day 27, April 10, 2015
My time at Oberlin has come to an end. It was bittersweet and I am not gonna lie about it. Of course I am happy to be done and move onto the next chapter of my life but I really enjoyed my time here and the entire athletic department really embraced me as one of their own. The entire department had a staff meeting and the football coaches were in and out of the building with some recruits so I was mostly by myself throughout the day, but I never really mind that. For me, I wanted it to be just like another day. I didn't want anyone to feel obligated to make a big deal out of my last day. I just wanted it to be normal and go about my business and for the most part it was. Because the coaches had an "off" day with recruits, there was no film watching. I caught Jay early in the morning and he gave me my to do list. Another 15 athletes that needed a grade and he wanted it done ASAP. Wasn't really sure why he wanted it done so quickly but I tried my best to have it done. Today's group of prospects focused on the offensive line. I found it very hard to grade OL prospects just because I don't have much experience doing it. I tried my best and went back to some of the things the O-Line coach would say in film. I would then look for that type of stuff in the film of these prospects. So after I had finished that the day was just about up. It was about 4pm and the other coaches had left for the weekend. We all had brief conversations and they sent me on my way. Jay and my conversation was a little more detailed. He thanked me for all my time I put in and we briefly talked about our goals, both his and mine in the near future. He wished me the best of luck in my future and told me that if I ever need anything, don't hesitate to call him. On my drive home, I really started to reflect on all the stuff that I had accomplished in my time at Oberlin. I not only learned so much about recruiting and scouting, but I helped out the staff tremendously. I can say with confidence that I saved them several hours of work in setting up that database and being able to get information on local coaches. I believe that Oberlin was just as impressed and satisfied with my performance, as much as I was with them. They are really trying to build an athletic reputation at Oberlin and it is showing. I enjoyed my time there but am looking forward to the next chapter of my life.
Day 26, April 8, 2015
Another scouting day in the books and I now have only 1 day left here at Oberlin. Like Monday, Jay had a list ready for me right when I got into the office. He wanted me to watch, learn and then give grades out on each individual. One thing I do know about watching film, is that you cannot just watch it one time and be able to grade a prospect. It takes multiple times, watching something over and over again before you can give an opinion based off of what you see. So when Jay gives me a list of 20 kids, it will take some time to really watch them and gather an opinion. Let's take a kid I saw for example. He was from Georgia and played QB. He is an excellent athlete and can throw the ball decently. I tend to watch the film at least three times. First is to get a gauge as to how explosive, fast and athletic a kid is. Second is looking at things more schematically, like why did he go to this, instead of going to that type of thing. This usually takes more time because I am stopping the film and constantly rewinding. Lastly I usually watch it one more time to really put it all together, to judge the level of competition, and small things like fight for extra yards, or to see how tough of a kid he is. But this kid I watched today was the epitome of a football player. He reminded me a "Tim Tebow" type of kid because he seemed to a great leader of the team and had this certain will to win. He wasn't much of a thrower, but did have a nice compact throwing motion, it wasn't elongated. What I was impressed with most was his decision making skills. At 17, he seemed to be changing plays at the line and putting his team in better positions to succeed. You don't see that too often. I graded this kid out as an A because of his instincts and football IQ. Because of the type of offense Oberlin runs, he would be a good fit for the program.
Day 25, April 6, 2015
Finally its my last week and after today I was pretty excited. Not excited because my time is almost up but because I finally had a new task. Jay finally let me watch some film on kids and let me give an overall grade. I had been doing this on my own time throughout my mentorship but because the database was the primary objective it took up most of my time. I think that Jay knew I always wanted to do something like this but couldn't find time for me to do it. Luckily for me, I finally got an opportunity to test my skills. The day started out like any other for the past 2 weeks, the coaching staff and I all watched film from the morning practice and then went about our business. Jay came to me right away with a list of names that he wanted inserted into the database and also my opinion on each player. I am guessing that Jay already had an idea of these kids but wanted to test me in a way and see what I can learn from watching them. I also think he started me off easy by giving me a bunch of defensive backs to watch, thats the position I played in college so I already have an eye on what to look for. So for my daily activity it was basically sitting infront of a computer screen all day and watching film. This may sound boring to some people but it is something that I have an interest in and want to do in my future.
Day 24, April 3, 2015
Surprising I am done with Coach Coyne's list. I don't know how I did it but it went a lot easier than I had planned. My day started off the same as it did on Tuesday and Wednesday, we watched film of practice and I picked up some things that the coaches were talking about. I still can't get over the value of what I am learning from them even when they are not trying to teach me something. But after watching the film for 30 mins, I went to work. I think I failed to mention in my last post that I did begin to format and insert prospects into the main database. There were 11,000 prospects. It is crazy to think that scouting/recruiting personnel do some much work with so many prospects and hope to land about 15 of the total amount in the database. Although I received a lot of praise I believe it is a tough job for anyone to do and I admire their commitment. But back to the list, Matt is from the Boston area and he coached up at a school near there so unlike GoBig recruiting, his list consisted of a lot of Northeastern/New England prospects and had a trickle down effect down the coast to Virginia. It was nice to see that Matt's list was a little more organized and definitely more detailed so the information I had to plug in was mostly within his list. It was more of a formatting issue rather than finding appropriate data on a prospect. Not gonna lie, this took me the entire day. I took a short lunch and really hammered it all out. Next week is my last week and Jay had mentioned before I left that I would be doing something different my last week.
Day 23, April 1, 2015
Wednesday and April Fool's Day. Surprisingly I was not pranked at all throughout the day, which was uncharacteristic of the assistant coaches. But I guess today's practice wasn't what they expected. There seemed to be a lot of frustration, especially from the offensive side of the ball. Matt and Nate were definitely in a bad mood and I soon found out why after watching film with all of the coaches. It definitely wasn't one of the better days for the offense. If I remember right, I think that all 4 QBs threw at least 1 interception. So after watching film with those guys, I went back to work on the list that Matt provided me. Left off with Alabama and made my way to Illinois by the end of the day. It's not that the tasks they ask me to do are difficult activities, it's just that they are so time consuming with each and every one. I did run into a problem that I think will set me back a little. The list that Matt provided has extremely detailed, but had more than 1 state mentioned with each athlete. I had to figure out if the state first mentioned was the state they were from. So that took some time but after I found that it was the second of the states mentioned, I quickly went back through all of the other prospects and changed to the appropriate state. I am not quite sure why more than 1 state was mentioned but it wasn't too much for me to handle. With only a couple days left I can definitely see this list taking up most of my time.
Day 22, March 31, 2015
I was in Philadelphia this past weekend so my schedule this week will go Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday. But spring ball has finally started for the football team. There was definitely more of a buzz around the office when I showed up today. Jay had decided to hold practices in the morning, starting at 6am to get them out of the way and not conflict with class. So the coaches are at the office and stadium by 515am every Monday, Wednesday, Friday. There daily schedule would consist of practice in the AM and then meetings in the afternoon, usually around lunch time, 1230pm. So when I got in on Tuesday, after catching up with some of the coaches, I got to finally watch practice of Day 1. Of course there were some good and bad things happening on Day 1, but the coaches seemed rather optimistic about the Spring. Another thing that was great, was that the coaches would ask my opinion on certain parts of the play which helps me tremendously by increasing my knowledge of the game entirely and not with just one position on the field. So after watching film in the morning I began to look over Matt's list of prospects. Now this list had over 11,000 prospects from the US, my job was to modify the list and then insert the names into the data base. No matter how fast I go, 11,000 prospects will take some time. So for most of the day I formatted the list, with Pos., Name, High School, Email, Phone Number tabs and then plugged each player into their respective state tab. By the end of the day I was only able to get through Alabama, the first state on my list. Hopefully it gets a little easier in the next few days.
Day 21, March 27, 2015
It's Friday and most of the athletic department didn't show up today. I definitely felt like a ghost town in the office today. Other than the sports participating in the Spring (baseball/softball and lacrosse) I don't think I saw any other coaches or athletes. Anyways, today was meant for me to finish the GoBig recruiting list and I did just that. I am not sure if it is the overwhelming quietness throughout campus, but this week made me feel like I accomplished a lot. I left off with Indiana and as I began to get to states out west, there were less and less prospects so I guess it did become easier. I try to mention a few people that I see on each list but because there are so many, its hard to really focus on one or two individuals. I did find it interesting however, that I saw a kid from I believe TX and for some reason GoBig recruiting had all of his offers listed in their database. Knowing the type of school Oberlin is and the type of athlete this kid was I immediately showed Jay and got a good laugh about he chances of really coming to Oberlin. I think that's what I like about Jay the most. He's a realist and understands the hardships Oberlin faces with recruiting certain individuals. He has to play both cards, academically and athletically. So after we shared that moment with the staff I was back to work the rest of the day. I sat through a couple meetings regarding recruiting expectations of spring ball because it starts next Monday. I believe most of the staff go out of the office a little early but because Jay stayed, I felt obligated as well. I am heading to Philly tonight and won't be back till Monday night so next weeks schedule could get a little crammed.
Day 20, March 25, 2015
The students are still on Spring Break and I slightly wish I was there too. On Monday, Jay had sent me over a hundred emails of prospective athletes from around the country. Today I finished that task. I don't know if it was the silence within the office or on campus, but I felt like I was in the zone when I put the kids into the database. It was just like any other situation with formatting the information and then copying and pasting the information into the database. I feel like it's easier for me, maybe not for others, to have all the information provided within the email itself, rather than attach a file with information. That way I can just copy the email, phone number and all the other information rather than format a spreadsheet every five minutes. This task took me up until lunch, like I said its a slow week. But after lunch I made it a goal of mine to put some serious work into the GoBig Recruiting list. If I remember right, and forgive me I have seen a lot of names and high schools, but I think I made it up until either Indiana or Illinois on the list. I did find however that there were a lot of eastern state high schools. I did some research and found that GoBig Recruiting is a Pennsylvania based company. So on Friday I expect a lot of PA and OH prospects.
Day 19, March 23, 2015
Its the start of a new week and Oberlin College is on Spring Break, but the coaches still come into work, so I do too. After completing the coach's list for Jay, he forwarded me a couple hundred emails through our Oberlin Football email account and asked that I insert these prospects into the data base. This was very similar to when I had paper copies of information and was manually inserting them into the database, rather than format, copy and then paste. Unlike the packets however, these kids were from all over the country and Jay didn't exactly categorize them before sending them to me. That was probably the toughest part. Most kids that emailed Jay had little information within their email. So it was up to me to find who they were and find out their High School and position. The email and phone numbers were usually in the emails. The best way I found to accomplish this task was to use Hudl, the highlight tape website used by most high school athletes now. The website provides the information I was looking for, position and high school. The only problem I ran into was that sometimes there were prospects with the same name so it was difficult to differentiate who was who. At that point I just would look up the area code of the phone number given to me and hope that it matched with one of the Hudl accounts. The coaches didn't seem to worried just as long as they had the email address.
Day 18, March 20, 2015
When I walked in the office today I checked the Oberlin email and did receive the entire database from the GoBig recruiting coordinator. The list included prospects from all over the country and had over 6,000 prospects. This list was sent in an Excel spreadsheet, which is fine, but because it was so long my computer acted slow throughout the whole day. As I have said before in my posts, the tasks aren't difficult but they are time consuming. Because this file is so large, the amount of time it took me today to begin to format the information was too long. I had to scan over all the prospects Positions, Names, High Schools and contact information before I began to insert them into the database. Because this is all I did today, I guess I will talk about how I believe my mentorship is helping the Oberlin program. It goes unmentioned in my posts some times but I do receive a lot of recognition from both Jay and the rest of the coaching staff. They have said countless times that I am saving them all a lot of work and allowing them to focus on other things prior to spring ball. Sometimes the work can be repetitive but when the staff shows appreciation it makes me feel like I am part of the staff, which is always a good feeling. I also feel that I am learning a lot about coaching at the collegiate level, not just the Xs and Os, but the day to day operations of being a coach and how they deal with administration and recruits on a daily basis. I think this is the best part about my mentorship. That type of experience is definitely invaluable and is something I can take with me forever. One last thing before I go, the college will be on Spring Break next week so I am sure things will be much slower than usual.
Day 17, March 18, 2015
Today was all about the Coaching Database. I focused on schools from both Pennsylvania and Ohio. Most of the PA schools were Western Pennsylvania and the Ohio schools were from everywhere. I feel like the hardest part about this task was finding not only the right information, but locating the information as well. Most of the small schools in both Ohio and Pennsylvania didn't have athletic webpages. So finding the emails and phone numbers were very difficult at times. I had to do some real digging in order to find the appropriate contact information. Jay and David did help me out however, with a site to find the information I needed. It's called Scoutware. It is a database program that allows you, if you are a member, to find the information needed on coaches/players if they too are in the database. Once Jay had showed me how to maneuver through the webpage it was actually a lot easier. Some of the schools I had to put in the database included those from the packet of rosters from schools. Luckily when I was putting in the prospects, I did highlight the coaches information because I had heard Jay say I would eventually put in the coach information as well. So once I was finished with the PA and OH coaches I thought I would be moving on to my next assignment. However, Jay came back in the office and rattled off 15 more Michigan schools for me to find information on. All of the schools Jay gave me to put into the database were part of his recruiting area. He had known most of the coaches, but he left it to me to see if there were any changes within the past year. It was nice for a change to see him challenge me in a way and put a little pressure on me to succeed. I hadn't really felt that when I was just "plugging and chugging" the prospect names into the database. Once I had finished the schools Jay left for me I had one more thing for the day. We received an email from a prospect database, GoBig Recruiting. They had asked for access to our database in exchange for ours. I simply had to reply to the email with a copy of our database, which at the time included 8,000 prospects.
Day 16, March 16, 2015
This new week was all about a Master Coaching Contact List. Jay and David gave me a break from the prospects and turned my focus to creating a spreadsheet full of information on coaches that they had been in contact with. To be honest, I was ok with this because I was getting kind of annoyed with doing the same thing over and over again. So the first thing I had to do, was go through all of the paper copies and packets of rosters I had from the prospects in PA, MI, and OH. Because I was unaware of ever using those packets again, I didn't keep them organized so I spent a good part of my time organizing them back into the states. Once I had accomplished that I began to put coaches contact information into the spreadsheet. The primary categories included name, high school, email and phone number. Today I started with Michigan because it had the least amount of coaches within the packets. Some of the schools I saw included Farmington Hills, Milford, Troy, and Ann Arbor Central. This part was pretty easy to be honest. It was just locating the information that took some time. Lastly, I finally got to meet the new quarterbacks coach, Matt Coyne from CT. He's a couple years older than me but seemed like a real nice guy. The coaches seemed OK with him and thought he would be a great addition to the staff.
Day 15, March 13, 2015
Another week down. Friday was slow, like most other Fridays. Because its the "off season" the coaches don't put as much time in the office compared to "in-season" so I was by myself in the office most of the day. I guess its not a bad thing, but a little interaction is always good to break up the repetitive feeling during the day. As I said in my last entry I was entering OH prospects into the database from the rosters and packets of OH high schools, which are usually given on "College Nights". Wednesday I had more of the southern and Northeastern parts of OH. For some reason today I had central OH, the Columbus area and Toledo area. My guess is that they were organized in that way, which I have no preference about because the information will go in no matter what. Anyways, I had prospects from Columbus schools, such as Dublin Coffman, Bishop Watterson, and Hilliard Davidson. All three of those schools had quite a few athletes that met the requirements to be accepted into Oberlin College. Again, those requirements are a 3.0 GPA and at least a 25 ACT score. I wasn't told the required score for the SAT. Of course those requirements can be altered if need be, but that tends to be the baseline. Lastly, Jay told me that they had finally hired a quarterbacks coach, the one they interviewed 2 weeks ago and he will be in on Monday. He seemed pretty excited, especially since spring ball is right around the corner.
Day 14, March 11, 2015
Finally finished up with the PA possible recruits and now today I shifted to the OH group of recruits. When I was given the task to manually put in these recruits to the database, I tried to make it easier on myself and sorted each prospect by State (PA, OH, MI), so when it came time to put them into the database it would be much easier for me and I would not have to jump from state to state in the Google Docs page. As for the OH prospects, they had information on athletes from all over OH. Primarily though there were a lot of Cleveland area schools, as well as southern Ohio. I found it interesting that Oberlin didn't have paper copies of rosters and potential recruits from high schools nearby (Lorain County), that is the area I am from. I wonder if they already have the information they need about those kids because they are so close. Either way, I would think that Oberlin would try to recruit as many local kids as possible to sort of "build" the program. One last thing I noticed, which was kind of funny was my brother being on the Oberlin recruiting list. My brother will be a senior next year, 2016 and I was kind of surreal to see my brother getting looked at by colleges. He is a tremendous athlete and is very intelligent. He is currently looking at Ivy League schools but its great to know high academic schools such as Oberlin are looking at him.
Day 13, March 9, 2015
Day 13 is in the books and it was a long day. As I left off on Friday, I had been manually plugging and chugging in names, emails, phone numbers, etc... into the 2016 Oberlin recruiting database. It just so happened that today I focused primarily on prospects from Pennsylvania. There were actually a lot of talented prospects from PA. I won't name any names but one WR (wide receiver) led his team to a State Championship with over 65 catches, 1,200 yards and 15 TDs. I will be honest however, knowing the type of recruits that Oberlin lands and also the type of player this individual was, I highly doubt he would consider Oberlin. I do find it interesting that I get the chance to watch some of these kids highlight tapes. It not only allows myself to get a look at these individuals for Oberlin, but helps me gain more experience and it teaches me what to look for in kids at certain positions. I do feel that my skills from this time at Oberlin have increased. Those skills being, scouting, communication, organization, and becoming more open about voicing my opinion on certain matters. I would say that all of those skills have seen a steady increase.
Day 12 March 6, 2015
Day 12 is over and so is week 4. I have officially hit the half way point during my time at Oberlin and have enjoyed it thoroughly. Today's tasks dealt with MANUALLY putting prospects into the recruiting database. I was given a large stack of papers and was tasked with sorting through their information and finding 2016 prospects. I wouldn't say the task was difficult, but it was time consuming. Normally everything was online and I could copy and paste things after formatting, but now I was manually plugging in phone numbers and emails, which wasn't all that fun. I got about half of the papers done because some were 2015 prospects or didn't qualify academically. Monday I will be finishing up those 2016 prospect profiles and starting the Coaches contact information database, which should be a lot less time consuming. I also got word that I will be starting to watch film on some of the prospects and give them grades based on my knowledge. Jay and I have also discussed the potential of myself creating a 7 on 7 summer football camp for local high schools and prospective athletes from the area. We have briefly discussed it but it seems like that will be my next big task. Looking forward to it!
DAY 11 MARCH 4, 2015
Halfway done with the week. Right away I was sent to the "social room", where I went on Monday and had to set up more tables and chairs. Today the coaches have an interview for a QBs coach position. So I was in charge of setting up the room for a meeting with the interviewee and the players on the team. After I had taken care of that I decided to hammer out some more of the spreadsheets with prospects for 2016. I can finally say I completed those response emails. Other than plugging players into the database, it was a very relaxed day because of the interview with the coach. I will say it was nice to be able to sit in on some of the interview process (chalk talk, film, etc...) and learn some of the questions coaches ask the interviewees.
Day 10 March 2, 2015
Its Week 4 of my internship and it seems to be flying by. Today I started my day off putting prospects into the database from the coaches response emails. They were mostly from California and Texas, which was weird because I was randomly selecting them. The formatting takes the most time because my excel program doesn't seem to be compatible with most of the spreadsheets. After plugging in about 10 prospect lists, Coach Anderson pulled me away from the computer (thank God) and had me set up tables and chairs in their social room, for banquets and meetings. It was for a senior dinner so to speak. Oberlin only had 5 seniors on the team last year. That took about an hour and then I was back on the computer. As I started plugging prospects, I began to watch film on some of the kids. I think this will help me in the long run with my career aspirations as well as Oberlin, if the ask my opinion of the player. Other than moving tables and chairs, my day consisted of sitting in front of the computer.
Day 9 Feb 27, 2015
Its Friday and there isn't a lot going on in the office. The head coach and offensive assistant are heading to a coaches clinic in Indianapolis and making a recruiting stop in Michigan on the way back. So it was just me and another coach in the office today, which wasn't a bad thing, I kind of liked having it be relaxed in the office. I got a lot done today. I received a couple more emails and a list from one of the coaches. I spent the day doing what I have done since the start, formatting the recruiting database. Not gonna lie though, I am starting to get a little tired out of having the same task every day. I am thinking of asking Jay to increase my workload, but that will have to wait until Monday. We did speak briefly last week about the possibility of me organizing a 7 on 7 football camp they host for local high schools. But I guess we will wait and see. Just gonna do the best I can at this job and hope to get something new in the future.
DAy 8 Feb 25, 2015
Another day in the books. I feel like I am really starting to get the hang of this mentorship. Today has been like most other days. I had checked the Oberlin Football email and had over 30 emails about 2016 prospective athletes. So today was all about going through those emails and properly placing them into the Oberlin football Google Drive. Once they were placed in the drive, I would dump all the coaches emails into a "Coaches Response" folder so I could reply to those emails and thank them for their support. Not gonna lie, it was a process to do this because I was not only plugging players into the database, I was formatting most of the lists coaches gave me. Some were excel sheets, word documents and PDFs. I guess it was just difficult because my computer was running slow and it was hard to download all of those lists. I had received emails from coaches all around the country. I never realized the amount of Texas high schools until I started this job. There are so many, especially in certain cities, it is crazy to imagine how many athletes come from Texas alone. So after a long day of plugging prospects into the database, two of the coaches asked me to play tennis. So I decided to use that as my workout today. I now have a ton of respect for tennis players. I was exhausted after playing a couple games.
day 7 feb 23, 2015
Monday and starting off a brand new week. I have one more week of my Term I courses and I couldn't be more excited to finish up my degree. Jay had a weightlifting class from 9 to 10am so it gave me a chance to update my webpage and catch up on some other work. Right when I had began to start formatting the coaches page, both Dave and Jay told me that I was gonna be doing something else. Oberlin uses a site called Scoutware, which is a recruiting site that allows the coaches to send out mass emails to players, prospects, parents, alumni and coaches. Well that is exactly what I did. David shared a coach's list with me and had over 500 coaches contact information. However, it wasn't as bad as it sounds. Because I had previously formatted things and saved the template, it was easy to align the coaches email and then copy it into the Scoutware website. After I had sent out the mass email, which I was in charge of creating by the way, I then waited to receive emails from coaches about 2016 prospects and it did not take long. In 15 mins of waiting, I had received 20 emails right away. Now that I had the prospect lists, I had to save them into the Oberlin football Google Drive and then plug their names and information into the Master Recruiting Database. This was definitely difficult because coaches had sent in lists that were Word documents, Excel spreadsheets and sometimes the information was in paragraph form in emails. This was difficult to take care of because I was not only inputting the data into the database, I was formatting it and realigning items. It was definitely a long process.
day 6 feb 20, 2015
Finally made it to the weekend! Today was pretty exciting to because I had finally finished my task of inputting all the athletes from NCSA into Oberlin's recruiting database. Texas was definitely a hull with over 700+ athletes but after that it was pretty much smooth sailing. Finished up from Texas to the International tab but that took most of the day. After I had finished that up, Jay and David and I began talking about my next task. It seemed that I would start to do the same thing that I have done, but with coaches this time. There were some things that they had to take care of prior to me getting started so I left that day with no real plan in order. But my anticipation for the next few days would be a lot like what I did this past week. We will see.
day 5 feb 18, 2015
Wednesday's are big work days in the office, especially after we had a potential QBs coach withdrawal his name from consideration. It was definitely a weird situation because I had sat in on the interview and he was definitely a guy that seemed interested in coming to Oberlin. Most of the coaches were a little on edge because of it. I went right back to work on the recruiting database and went from OH to TN. Texas was up next and they had over 700+ prospective athletes, so I looked forward to inputting those guys into the database. Because the search continued for a new QBs coach, Jay had me do a little research. First I had to sort through his emails of potential candidates then print out their Resume, Cover Letter and References in that order. After sorting through and printing off 30+ candidates I had to make copies. Now I wouldn't waste time talking about this but it was definitely an experience. I had so much trouble with the copier I ended up scanning each document and printing things off one by one. It was quite frustrating. That was the last thing I had done before heading into my workout.
Day 4 feb 16, 2015
Felt completely recharged today and the progress showed. Got in at my normal time but I was on a roll with plugging in prospects into the database. Went from FL all the to OH and will begin OH, first thing on Monday. I was even able to finish the Ivy League Camp rosters that had been given to me last week. Once I had figured out some of the formatting issues I really was able to plug people in and keep moving. There isn't a lot of stuff going on in the office however. The football team has weights in the mornings on Mon-Wed-Fri from 6-730 and 730-9 but other than that there is very little football meetings taking place. Even though I am not being compensated for my time here at Oberlin, I do have the opportunity to workout so I usually work out after I finish my hours. It is nice to have the opportunity to workout at any time of the day.
Day 3 Feb 13, 2015
Day 3 felt pretty long, not gonna lie. Possibly because I am sick but I needed to put in the hours. Today was pretty much the same as Day 2. A lot of input into the recruiting database. California took me quite sometime due to the high number of prospective athletes on Wednesday. Today, although sluggish I was able to get to FL, which is another large prospective athlete roster. Along with the NCSA database, I was set up with 3 Ivy League Camp rosters for 2016 prospective athletes. I broke that up throughout the day, switching between NCSA and the Ivy League Camps. Not gonna lie it felt pretty good to finish this day up and rest over the weekend.
day 2 Feb 11, 2015
Day 2 is in the books. Started my day at 9am and immediately went right to work. I had already known what to do from my first day so I needed little guidance for what needed to be done. I was essentially on my own all day because the coaching staff had an interview for a QBs coaching position. It was actually pretty neat to sit in on a coaching interview to hear the types of questions that the coaches give and how the interviewee responds. As for my day, I uploaded prospective athletes into the recruiting database using Google Docs. Within the database there are state tabs (ex. AL, AZ, CA) and I had completed AL-CA. I was also introduced to other prospective documents like camp rosters and national databases. Oberlin uses a national database known as NCSA and today I primarily used that.
Day 1 Feb 9, 2015
Today was my first day on the job with Oberlin Football. Didn't get a whole lot of work done today. Today was made primarily for me to acclimated with both the staff and types of programs/work I will be doing in the next coming weeks. I had first arrived at 10am, which was nice being able to sleep in for a change. Once I arrived I met up with Jay, Head Coach, and we began just talking about where I was at in regards to school and my knowledge of football after I told him I had played at Tiffin. He's a real good dude and easy to talk to. It makes sense why Oberlin thought he was a great fit for the team. In my first day I saw a ton of football players find it easy to keep a conversation with him. After talking to Jay for about 30 mins about school, football and my work schedule, I met the other members of the staff. Those coaches were Nate Cole, Offensive Coordinator, Adam Schmidt, Defensive Line Coach, and David Kalgren, Defensive Backs/Recruiting Coordinator.
David was the one that really showed me the ropes as to how they recruit at Oberlin. Because the school is tough to get into, it is hard for them to find both quality athletes as well as quality students. Oberlin uses Google Docs as their primary resource for setting up their recruiting database. After David showed me how to format and add entries into the database, I met with all the coaches together to get a better feel for the group. These guys have been great people and I look forward to working with them for the next few weeks.
